Tell Puff I’m Down For Chasing the Dream

Welcome to Rhymer Prymer. This is a blog I am creating with the goal of bringing a little more grace and dignity to the world of rap music. Or that was the original goal, but in a business permeated with some of the day’s most outlandish characters (They ALL hang out too), I have decided that focusing my blog on the bizarre of the hip hop world is the most interesting, honest, and easiest of endeavors. Making fun of rap greats is going to be as simple as making fun of Sarah Palin in some ways.

Also I will be giving some love to some of my favorite rap songs. Once I get acquainted with the rules on mp3 posting, I’ll do something about it. Here’s a 5-song playlist of where you should be directing your ears this week.

5) When the Money Goes- Jay-Z- This song makes the list because Hov is always a must hear, but I can’t help but wish the beat was twice as fast. Don’t slow down, Jay. 30’s the new 20.

4)Prom Queen- Lil Wayne -Psych. I just want to complain about it. This song is worse than this trailer for Weezy’s Katie Couric interview (Lil Wayne is sounding more and more like an old woman who breathes through her throat these days). Prominent rappers need to start recognizing that rock music goes a little beyond Linkin Park and FaLlOuT BoY.

4) Money- N.A.S.A. feat. David Byrne, Chuck D., Ras Congo, Seu Jorge, & Z-Trip - This album is probably my current most anticipated.

We need more white parties.

It sounds like a Talking Heads/Puplic Enemy collaboration with plenty of DJ work that would be played at a white party in Dubai.

3) Busta Rhymes- Wack - Lately Busta’s been dropping a lot of promising stuff that seems just off target (he even had his own perfect example of ridiculous Linkin Park Love). This cut is dead on though. It has sealed my excitement for Back on My B.S. and an upcoming tour stop at Toad’s Place in New Haven. Busta should also be applauded for recognizing the effective simple beat is still possible without all beeps and boops.

2) Lil Wayne feat. Pharrell- Ay Man- Okay this one’s pretty good. It always seems to happen this way.  Just when he’s Mufassa dangling from the cliff and all the metallic buzzing that’s been gurgling out of everyone’s speakers has me feeling a lot like Scar, Weezy reminds you he is indeed, the man.

1) B.O.B.- Auto Tune- This song is great in an everyone-was-thinking-it-but-someone-needed-to-say-it way. I will put up plenty of posts lamenting Lil Wayne’s gradual descent into the bowels of vocorder-dom. Look out for B.O.B. world.

Bonus: The ULTIMATE Roots Hip-Hop 101- User tonywashington posted about this gem on the forums at Okayplayer. Hip-Hop 101 is the rap medley that the Roots always stick into their sets that adds another dimension to each show. This one is almost twenty minutes long and is perhaps the most passionate love letters to early rap on record.

RAW BONUS EXTREME: Everybody check The Rap Up’s If Wu-Tang Members Were NBA Players. I could not agree with their Method Man/Shaq Diesel linkage more.

Great look into the simplicity of the Busta Rhymes beat, good rap can still come without beeps boops and vocoders. Looking forward to the next post.
